Buying a Sealed Old Phone: What "New Old Stock" Really Means

02 November 2026

There's something special about opening a phone that's been sealed in its box for years: the film still on the screen, the untouched charger, that new-phone smell from 2017. Sealed old phones are popular with collectors, people replacing a model they loved, and anyone who wants a classic in perfect condition.

This guide explains what "new old stock" really means, what to expect from the battery, and how to get the best out of a sealed phone once it arrives.

What is new old stock?

New old stock (sometimes shortened to NOS) means a product that was made years ago but never sold or used. It sat in a warehouse or a shop's stockroom and is still in its original packaging. It's different from:

  • Refurbished: used before, then tested, cleaned, data-wiped and graded. Usually supplied in a generic box.
  • Open box: opened, sometimes briefly used, then returned.
  • Replica or clone: a copy made to look like the real thing. We never sell these.

On our listings, sealed new old stock is marked NEW · SEALED and refurbished items are marked USED · GRADED.

What years in the box do to a battery

This is the honest bit. A sealed phone has never been charged by a customer, but its lithium battery has still aged. Lithium batteries slowly lose a little capacity in storage, even unused. So:

  • Expect the battery to last less than it did on launch day, especially on the oldest models.
  • A phone that's been stored for a long time may be fully flat. It can take 15 to 30 minutes on charge before it shows any sign of life. That's normal.
  • If a battery doesn't hold a charge properly, you're covered by our warranty and 30-day returns.

Setting up a sealed phone: our tips

  1. Charge it before you switch it on. Use a decent wall plug and leave it to charge fully the first time.
  2. Check the battery isn't swollen. The back should sit flat. If it bulges, stop charging and contact us.
  3. Update the software. A phone fresh out of the box is on the software it shipped with years ago. Connect to Wi-Fi and install the latest update it offers before you add your apps.
  4. Keep the box and accessories. If you're buying as a collector, the original box, manuals and unused accessories are a big part of the value.
  5. Storing it unused? Charge it to around half every few months. A lithium battery left completely flat for years can stop taking a charge.

Why sealed phones cost more

Once a model is discontinued, the number of sealed examples only goes down. Every one that gets opened is one fewer left. That's why a sealed phone often costs more than the same model refurbished, and why the rarest colours and storage sizes cost more again.

Sealed phone FAQ

Is a sealed old phone really brand new?

Yes, it's never been used or activated. It just wasn't sold when it was first made. Only the battery's age sets it apart from launch day.

Will it come with a warranty?

Yes. The manufacturer warranty on these older models has usually ended, so we cover them ourselves. See the product page for the details, and every item has 30-day returns.

Will opening it reduce its value?

To a collector, yes: a sealed box is worth more than an opened one. If you're buying to use it, open it and enjoy it. That's what it was made for.
