Refurbished vs new phones: which should you buy?

A refurbished phone can save you a lot of money, but it isn't the right choice for everyone. Here's how refurbished and new compare, what to check before you buy, and when paying for new is worth it.

What "refurbished" means at XTEC

Every XTEC Renewed device has been used before, then checked, cleaned and graded. Before it's listed it goes through a full functional test, it's data wiped and unlocked to any UK network, and it comes with a charger and a 12-month XTEC warranty. The grade tells you how it looks, not how it works: every grade works like new.

Why people choose refurbished

  • Lower price. You get more phone for your money, especially with iPhones, which hold their value well.
  • Less waste. Giving a working phone a second life means one less new device has to be made.
  • No compromise on checks. At XTEC every refurbished device is tested, unlocked, covered by a 12-month warranty and delivered free in the UK.

What to check before you buy refurbished

  • The grade. Grades describe cosmetic condition. All our current refurbished stock is graded Pristine: no visible scratches or marks. See how we grade.
  • Battery health. Batteries wear with use. Our Pristine devices have at least 85% battery health.
  • Warranty and returns. Look for at least 12 months' warranty. You also have your legal rights, including 30 days to reject a faulty item.
  • Software updates. Older models eventually stop getting the latest software. For example, the iPhone 7, iPhone 8 and iPhone XR no longer get the newest version of iOS. They still work, and apps usually keep working for a while, but if you want years of updates choose a newer model.
  • Unlocked or locked. Our refurbished phones are unlocked, so any UK SIM will work.

When buying new makes more sense

  • You want the longest possible software support.
  • You want the full manufacturer's warranty.
  • You want a specific colour or the very latest model.

The short answer

If you want a premium phone for less, and you're happy with a model that's a year or more old, refurbished is usually the better value. If you want the newest model with the longest support, buy new.
