Best Phones for Elderly Users in the UK (2026 Guide)
Buying a phone for a parent or grandparent is harder than it should be. Most phones are built for people who live on apps, not for someone who just wants to ring the family and read a text without squinting. This guide covers what actually matters for older users, and the phones we would pick from our own stock.
What to look for in a phone for an older person
- Large, well-spaced buttons. Physical keys are easier than a touchscreen for many people, especially with stiff fingers or poor eyesight.
- A clear screen with big text. A 2.4-inch screen or larger is comfortable to read.
- Loud, clear sound. Look for hearing-aid compatibility if they use one.
- An emergency (SOS) or assistance button. One press calls or texts chosen family members.
- Easy charging. A charging cradle means no fiddling with a small cable.
- 4G or 2G? See the network section below before you buy.
2G or 4G: which network does it need?
The UK networks have already switched off 3G. 2G is still running on EE, Vodafone and O2, so 2G phones still make calls and send texts today, but the networks plan to close 2G by 2033 at the latest. If you want a phone that will keep working for many years, choose a 4G model. If it is a cheap spare or a phone for the next few years, a 2G phone is still fine.
